Perhaps they are a Mage or even a Doctor, in pursuit of knowledge of one kind or another. Unlike Classes in other RPGs, which represent your character's path in life, Decked's Backgrounds are your character's starting point - what did they do before becoming an adventurer, or what were they trained to do before they left that life? This choice will determine what Skills you can be Trained or Expert in, what starting equipment you get, and how your character gets to re-draw cards during play. Of course, you will also need to pick a Background. In all, there are 16 races to choose from, each with their own unique bonuses and drawbacks! Background The main races in Decked are the sturdy Dwarf, graceful Elf, inventive Gnome, maligned Goblin, curious Halfling and resourceful Human, though with GM permission a player can be one of the so-called "Strange Races", ranging from the frozen Northman, the ponderous Unbound Golem, or even the half-dead Wraithling. Races function very similarly to other RPGs, providing a narrative for your character as well as a small array of stat changes and bonus abilities or drawbacks. When making a character you'll need to select both a Race and a Background. In addition it has space for their current Level, usually starting at Level 1, and Experience towards their next level, as well as a Race and Background. The very top row has space for a Character Name and Player Name, so people know who the sheet belongs to and which character it represents.
